Albacore tuna is a highly migratory fish with a life span of 11 to 12 years. The fish has exceptionally long pectoral fins and streamlined, torpedo-shaped bodies adapted to fast and continuous swimming with speeds up to 80km/hr.
Albacore tuna begin their migration to the cold waters of the North Pacific ocean when they are around 2 to 4 years of age.
This is a unique time for harvesting the wild Albacore tuna. Catching the tuna at this young age makes it a better tuna choice as it has not yet accumulated a significant amount of mercury and other pollutants. Albacore tuna is a low-fat, high protein choice with an abundance of Omega 3 fatty acids. It is also naturally in the anti oxidant selenium which is especially important for the brain, heart, and our immune system health.
Canadian Albacore is younger, tastier, healthier and richer in omega-3s
The Canadian Albacore fleet captures young (2-3 years of age) tuna almost exclusively. Small fishing boats called jig trollers harvest younger, smaller surface-swimming fish. The jigs are designed to catch fish on the ocean surface. (They simply cannot reach fish swimming in deep waters.) Ten to twenty fishing lines are attached to the boat’s outriggers. At the end of each line is a fishing lure shaped like a squid. The jigs are trailed in the water behind a slow-moving boat.
The hooked Albacore are immediately removed from the water, dressed, and then fast-frozen to minus-30 degrees Celsius
The cold, pristine northern Pacific ocean is naturally-high in Selenium
Selenium an anti-oxident that is essential to many bodily functions, including:

- cancer prevention
- thyroid function
- brain, heart and immune system functions
- reduction of inflammation
Selenium in our body binds with mercury and neither become bio-available. When selenium is greater or equal to that of mercury, the toxic effects of mercury are mitigated.
The Canadian Albacore fleet harvests young (2-3 years of age) tuna, at a unique time in their live, before they accumulate any significant amounts of mercury.
